Description

This group of four chest tombs is located 1 to 4 meters east of the chancel of the Church of St. Mary in Adderbury. They date from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, specifically from 1705, 1721, and the early 18th century. The tombs are made of marlstone and limestone.

The northernmost tomb is a rectangular marlstone chest featuring a deeply-projecting moulded base and cover. It has a small fielded inscription panel on each side, a shield on one end, and on the other end, a drapery surround enclosing the raised legend "WL/1705." The inscriptions are in Latin and honor William, Bishop of Llandaff, who was formerly the Vicar of Adderbury.

Next is a plain marlstone chest with shallow incised panels and a moulded base and cover, likely from the early 18th century, although the inscription on the cover is mostly illegible.

The late 17th-century limestone chest, located 1 meter east of the south-east buttress, features a deep moulded base and cover. One side and one end are decorated with square panels separated by a central baluster in relief, while the other end has an inscription panel that is now illegible.

Finally, to the east is a rectangular marlstone chest with a moulded base and cover, square recessed corner balusters, and fielded inscription panels. The earliest inscription commemorates John Lovesey, who died in 1721.
