Description
Brook Cottage is a house dating to the 17th century, with a possible earlier wing to the rear built into a bank. It is constructed of squared, coursed ironstone, and has a steeply pitched tile roof with a renewed stone ridge stack and a stone end stack. The original 17th-century part of the house comprises two units, forming an “L” shape with the later rear wing. The house has two storeys plus an attic and a cellar. The front elevation has a two-window range. On the left, a porch leads to the entrance. The left gable displays a four-light stone mullioned window on both the ground and first floors, along with a similar three-light attic window, all with hood moulds and label stops. The windows now have renewed metal casements. The main front elevation features a three-light stone mullioned window with a hood mould and label stops, and a three-light wooden casement window with a wooden lintel. Two further three-light stone mullioned windows with renewed metal casements, hood moulds, and label stops are situated on the first floor. A 20th-century roof dormer has been added. The rear wing has single and two-light casements on the ground floor, and three-light windows on the first floor. A straight joint marks the division between the 17th century and rear parts of the house. The interior includes a hooded spiral staircase, stop-chamfered beams, a fireplace with a wooden bressumer and stone jambs, and evidence of previous occupants in the Victoria County History.
