Description
Alkeron House is a house dating from the 19th century, with a datestone indicating 1633. It is constructed from squared, coursed ironstone and has a steeply pitched roof covered with red tiles and blue fishscale tiles. The gables are stone-coped with moulded kneelers, and the end stacks have shafts of blue brick. The house comprises a three-unit plan with a single-unit extension to the right. The two-storey front elevation has a three-window range. Two entrances are present, with four-centred arched stone heads and chamfered jambs. The entrance on the left is now blocked, with a 20th-century window inserted and a hood mould with diagonally shaped label stops above a datestone reading “Ad 1415”. The entrance on the right has a panelled and glazed door. The first floor has two three-light and one two-light stone mullioned windows, with a further three-light mullioned window on the far right. The windows have opening casements with wrought-iron fasteners, hood moulds, and label stops. A datestone, “BG 1633,” renewed in the 19th century, is located on the left end, alongside a two-light stone mullioned attic window. It is possible that “BG” refers to Bret Goodwin, who later became Lord of Epwell manor.
