Description
The farm complex at Coombe Hill Farm includes a house, barn, stables, and various associated structures such as cartsheds, granaries, and shelters, dating from around 1800. The buildings are constructed primarily of ironstone, with roofs of stone slates, clay tiles, and corrugated metal sheeting. The complex is arranged around a rectangular, walled farmyard entered from the south, with the barn situated centrally on the north side, stables and granaries to the west, and the house to the east.
The barn features a projecting porch with a hipped stone slate roof and plank double doors on its south elevation. A lean-to with a corrugated sheet roof and a “stable” door is located to the right of the entrance. The north elevation mirrors the south, with a similar porch and timber lean-to shelters. A four-bay cartshed, open to the north and supported by timber posts, connects to the west side of the barn, with slate roofing to the south and corrugated metal sheeting to the north.
The stables are composed of two distinct builds, noticeable by a straight joint and slight change in roof pitch. The western elevation has an altered recess serving as a cartshed and a full-height entrance with modern double doors. A stone stair is located in the north gable, leading to a granary entrance with a plain timber door. A projecting lean-to with a stone slate roof and a window opening is present on the east elevation, along with a stone stair leading to a granary door and window. A square, shuttered opening is situated at eaves level towards the north. The south-facing wall has been partially rebuilt with concrete block.
The two-storey and attic house has a stone slate roof with stone coped gables and a south end stack with a brick shaft. The west elevation, facing the farmyard, originally featured a central doorway, now partially blocked to create a square window opening, flanked by two similar openings under continuous timber lintels. Two similar openings at eaves level are blocked with timber. A two-light attic casement window is located in the north gable, beneath a timber lintel. A stone and brick outshut at the rear includes a brick sidewall stack, two openings to the east, and an entrance with a plain timber door to the south.
North of the house is a single-storey stone and brick range, extended from two bays to three, with entrances in each bay from the east. This range connects to the central barn via a three-bay cartshed opening to the south, with timber posts on stone bases.
The southern part of the yard is enclosed by a stone wall, recently covered by a corrugated sheet roof. A single-storey building with stone slate roofing sits in the southwest corner, featuring a doorway to the east and a ventilation loop in the north gable. This complex provides a good example of a planned farm from the enclosure era, and has survived with minimal alteration.
