Description

Shipton Lift Bridge is an accommodation lift-bridge located on the Oxford Canal, with origins in the late 18th century and alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The bridge features a tilting wooden plank deck, wooden handrails, and two balance beams set at a raking angle. It has brick abutments with concrete sills and brick wing walls that have trailing edges, along with stone rubbing blocks on the faces facing the canal. This bridge is part of an important series of lift-bridges on the Oxford Canal, representing a type that is now rare in England.
