Description

A row of three cottages with an attached outbuilding, dating to the early 17th century on the left and the mid to late 17th century on the right, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottages are constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with mid-19th century brick repairs and window jambs. They have a gabled thatched roof, and end and ridge stacks finished in stone and brick. The plan is based on four units. The cottages are two storeys high with a five-window front, with a three-window range on the left and a taller two-window range on the right. The left-hand range has a timber lintel over a 19th-century plank door, a horizontal sliding sash window, and a two-light casement with glazing bars. There are three 19th-century two- and three-light iron casement windows with glazing bars to this range. The taller right-hand range has timber lintels over a central plank door and an early 19th-century beaded six-panelled door to the left, as well as a horizontal sliding sash window and 19th-century two- and three-light iron casement windows with glazing bars. A rear outshut has been heightened with mid-19th-century brick. The interior of the rightmost cottage (No. 1) features 18th-century plank doors with butterfly and strap hinges, and a winder staircase to the rear. Cottage No. 3 on the left has stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. Cottage No. 2 was not inspected but is likely to contain features of interest. To the right is a late 17th-century two-storey stable with a single bay, built of limestone rubble and with a half-hipped plain tile roof. The stable has a blocked left door above a 20th-century door to the right.
