Description

The White Lion Hotel is a hotel and office building dating from the 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th century. It features a brick construction with a stucco front and Welsh slate roofs, along with brick end stacks. The building consists of two sections with a carriage entrance between them, and the properties extend to the rear.

The left section is two storeys high and has a two-window range. The ground floor has two sashes with four large panes each, while the first floor features two sashes with glazing bars that are three panes wide. The right end wall is made of brick with timber framing. Above the carriageway entrance, there is a cross window with margin lights and a cornice supported by consoles.

The right section is three storeys tall and also has a two-window range. This part is stuccoed and lined, with the ground floor displaying two semi-circular headed sashes. The first and second floors have two sashes each, which are adorned with moulded stone surrounds and glazing bars of three panes wide. The first-floor sashes are topped with cornices on consoles. There is a cornice at both the first and second floors, along with a wide eaves soffit and rusticated quoins on the right side.

There are side entrances, with the hotel entrance featuring panelled reveals, a door with margin lights, and an overlight. Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase in the left section and a 19th-century staircase in the right section. Additionally, there are two cast-iron external spiral staircases leading to the first floors of the rear ranges.
