Description

This listing describes a row of 29 headstones located approximately 8 meters south of the tower of the Church of St. Mary in Adderbury. The headstones date from the late 17th century to the mid-18th century and are primarily made of marlstone, with some in limestone.

The headstones numbered 2, 4 to 12, 14, 18, 19, 22, 25, and 28 are early 18th century and feature segmental heads with decorative cartouches that include flowers, drapery, and cherubs. The headstones numbered 1, 3, 15, 16, 20, 26, and 27 have shallower carvings and are mostly from a later period.

Notable examples include headstone number 13, made of limestone, which has a scrolled head and a shield-shaped inscription panel framed by fruit and flowers, commemorating William Caseles who died in 1680. Headstone number 17 features a square recessed panel flanked by scrolls and commemorates William Wise, who died in 1699. Headstone number 21 has an inscription framed by drapery and flowers beneath a winged cherub head, commemorating Richard Pottienger, who died in 1688 or 1689.

Headstone number 23 has a scrolled head with an inscription panel formed on folded drapery, commemorating Margaret Lawry, who died in 1692. Headstone number 24 features a rectangular panel flanked by scrolls and is likely from around 1700, commemorating Elizabeth Horwood. Finally, headstone number 29 has a recessed shield-shaped panel below a scrolled head, commemorating Jane Baswell, who died in 1662.

The headstones are arranged in a single closely-spaced row against the boundary wall of the Manor House.
