Description

Japonica Cottage is an 18th-century cottage that has undergone 20th-century alterations and additions. It is constructed from colourwashed coursed limestone rubble and features a steeply pitched thatched roof with a brick ridge stack. The right gable is stone-coped. Originally a single unit, it has been extended to form a two-unit plan and stands two storeys tall with a four-window range. The entrance, located to the right, has a plank door set in a moulded wood frame and is sheltered by a 20th-century porch. There is a small wood casement with glazing bars and a wood lintel to the right, while to the left are three 2-light wood casements, each with wood lintels. On the first floor, there is a single light casement and three 2-light wood casements, all with hood lintels.

Inside, the main ground floor room features an inglenook fireplace with a bread oven and a chamfered wood bressumer, along with a chamfered beam and a wood winder staircase. The doors are plank-style with strap hinges. The first floor reveals original common rafters visible in the partition walls of the bedrooms, along with plank doors that also have strap hinges.

Adjoining to the right is another cottage, also from the 18th century with 20th-century alterations. This cottage is made of colourwashed limestone rubble and has a 20th-century tiled roof with a brick end stack. It has a one-unit plan and is two storeys high with a single-window range. The entrance is off-centre to the left and features a panelled and glazed door with a gabled 20th-century porch. To the left is a small single-light casement, and to the right is a 2-light wood casement with a wood lintel. On the first floor, there is a 20th-century wood casement. The interior includes a chamfered beam, a refronted 19th-century fireplace, a wood winder stair, and plank doors with strap hinges.
