Description
The Gunther Tomb, located about 50 metres west of the Church of St Lawrence, is a Grade II listed chest tomb belonging to the Gunther family. It dates from the early 20th century and was originally situated on a railed platform. The tomb follows an 18th-century design but features many decorative enhancements. It has lugged and eared side panels adorned with bead and reel moulding, urn-shaped corner piers decorated with acanthus leaves, and end panels that display an elaborate arms cartouche. The top slab is moulded, and the tomb includes inscriptions dedicated to various members of the Gunther family, starting from 1890, with C E Gunther of Tongswood having acquired it in 1902.
