Description
Hartley House is a former workhouse, now serving as an old people's home, built around 1840 by Whichcord & Walker. The building is constructed from Tonbridge stone ashlar and features slate hipped roofs with gable parapets. A gabled crosswing projects from the center of the taller gable parapetted central block. It has tall brick stacks on gablets and is two storeys high. The front has nine windows arranged in a regular pattern, with three bay wings flanking a three bay central block. The windows include shallow tripartite sashes with keyed heads in the bays, and large tripartite sashes with keyed heads in the central block, which also features a large central pointed arch in a chamfered surround. The building has two-thirds glazed doors blocking an opening.
