Description
Hartley House is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century. It features a timber-framed structure with exposed close studding on the west side, and some brick infilling on the ground floor in the center. The north and south sides are weatherboarded and tile clad. The roof is plain tiled, hipped to the left and half hipped to the right, with a tall brick stack located off center to the left. The building has two storeys with garrets and an irregular arrangement of three windows on both floors, along with a large blocked window on the first floor to the left. The windows are large 19th-century wood-framed casements with latticing, and there is a boarded door to the right. At the rear, there is a catslide roof around a 17th-century wing that contains the stair and a stair dormer. Inside, the substantial frame is visible, featuring a large central stack with a huge fireplace in the dining room, which has a vast wooden bressummer. The interior also includes jowled posts and a side purlin roof with wind braces.
