Description

Hartley Farmhouse is a hall-house, dating to the early 16th century, which has been re-clad in the 19th century. It is timber-framed and now clad with plain and scalloped tile hanging. The building has a plain tiled hipped roof with a tall central red brick stack. The original plan was for a 3-bay hall-house. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an irregular arrangement of windows; three windows are visible on the first floor and four on the ground floor, with three closely grouped to the left of the front door. All the windows are wooden casements. A central boarded door is sheltered by a shallow pentice hood supported on brackets. A 20th-century catslide extension is located at the right end of the building.

Inside, the substantial timber frame is still visible. Large fireplaces are present in the sitting and dining rooms. In an upstairs bedroom, two blocked windows remain, featuring diagonal mullions. An arched hall truss survives, though the crown post is missing, though the notches remain visible. Curbed braces are visible on the first floor.
