Description
This is a headstone commemorating Matthew Diamond, located about 11 metres southwest of the west door of the Church of All Saints in Brenchley. It dates from 1676 and is made of freestone. The headstone features a shouldered design with a round-headed arched top. The inscription notes that Matthew Diamond died in 1670, and there is rustic carving in relief that includes an hourglass, a scythe, and a head. Below the inscription, it states, "Don by Robert Diamond, Son of Matthew Diamond ano domi 1676." This attribution is notable for its time, indicating a tradition where relatives, possibly professional or amateur masons, crafted headstones for their family members.
