Description

Hoppers Cottage and the Roundels are two houses that were converted from a barn, which dates back to the late 17th century or early 18th century, with documentation from 1730. The conversion to houses occurred between 1842 and 1864, with renovations taking place in the 1970s. The structure features framed construction, with the ground floor built in Flemish bond brick and the first floor weatherboarded. It has a peg-tile roof and brick stacks.

The buildings face east and consist of two two-cell houses, each with an axial stack. Hoppers Cottage has undergone some 20th-century alterations since its original conversion, while the interior of the Roundels was not inspected.

The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical four-window front, plus an additional window on a lower-roofed addition at the south end of the Roundels. There are four ground floor three-light 20th-century small-pane casements and six similar first floor two-light casements. The previous listing description from 1949 mentioned sash windows, which likely date back to the original conversion. The roof is half-hipped at the ends, featuring deep eaves that shelter former loft doors in the end walls.

The interior of Hoppers Cottage retains original wall framing on the first floor, with wall posts that have formed jowls. However, most of the braces between the wall posts and tie beams have been removed.

Hoppers Cottage and the Roundels form a group with neighboring listed houses at Mile Oak and are notable as an example of an early barn conversion. The current owner possesses material related to the building's history.
