Description
Watermans is a house that likely originated in the 17th century, with 20th century alterations underway at the time of the survey in 1989. It features a framed construction, with the ground floor built in brick and the first floor covered in weatherboarding. The roof is made of peg tiles, and there are brick stacks.
The house faces east and has a two-cell main range, with rooms heated by end stacks. There is a rear right outshut and a rear center wing from the 19th century that is at right angles to the main structure. It is known that the building was once two cottages.
The exterior consists of two storeys and presents an asymmetrical three-window front, with gabled ends. The end stacks are prominent, and the right end stack has tile-hung set-offs. A 20th century front door is located to the left of center, and there are various 19th and 20th century casement windows with one, three, and four lights, some featuring small panes.
Inside, there is exposed carpentry with jowled wall posts, and some evidence of a former smoke bay at the left end. The roof has a tie beam and clasped purlin arrangement, which is likely an 18th century replacement.
The house has group value with other listed roadside houses at Mile Oak.
