Description
The Strict Baptist Chapel, built in 1816 and altered in 1851, is located on Town Hill in Lamberhurst. This chapel features red and blue chequered brick with a slate-hung rear addition and a slate roof. It is designed in a simple Neo-Classical style and has a rectangular shape with a two-storey rear wing. The main façade has a pedimented gable that includes a gauged brick roundel and gauged round-headed windows on either side of central panelled double doors, which are topped with a traceried segmental fan and a flat hood supported by brackets. The side elevations have a brick dentil eaves cornice and a single tall window opening. All windows have late 20th-century top bung casements that replaced the original sashes. The rear wing features sash windows and an end stack. The upper courses of the chapel show evidence of the 1851 alterations, while the rear wing is entirely from that date, although some sources suggest the chapel was rebuilt in 1851.
To the east of the chapel is a walled forecourt, constructed around 1851, with walls approximately 4 feet high made of red brick in English bond on a sandstone base. The walls have coping stones and slight piers at the corners and at the central gate, which consists of simple iron uprights. The right return side of the forecourt is formed by the gates and walls of Murlingden, built around 1841, which predates the forecourt walls.
