Description
This is a headstone for William Gibbons, located about 9 meters south of the south aisle of the Church of All Saints in Brenchley. It dates from the early 18th century and is made of freestone. The headstone features a shouldered shape with scrolled corners and a round-headed arch, adorned with a relief carving of a cherub. The inscription commemorates William Gibbons of the Parsonage, who died in 1716. Below the main inscription, it notes that the headstone was "Done by Ambrose Gibbons and John Fuggle Grandsons." This attribution is unusual for its time, although a late 17th-century headstone in the churchyard has a similar inscription, indicating a tradition where relatives, whether professional or amateur masons, crafted headstones for their family members.
