Description

This oasthouse, located about 45 meters northeast of Wat Tyler's Cottage, is likely from the 1860s or 1870s and is currently undergoing conversion as of the survey in 1988. It features brick kilns topped with peg-tile roofs and timber cowls. The stowage area has been rebuilt using garden wall band brick on the ground floor, while the first floor is weatherboarded. At the time of the survey, there was no roof covering on the stowage, but a peg-tile roof was planned.

The building is a two-storey structure with a south-facing roadside position, situated immediately east of a converted barn. The stowage includes two kilns at the east end and a third kiln on the north side. The exterior displays an asymmetrical three-window front, with the ground floor featuring three 2-light windows with glazing bars to the left of the front door, while the right side is blind. The first floor has a loft door above the front door, two 2-light casements with glazing bars to the left, one similar window to the right, and a former ventilating panel indicated by a rectangle of fixed slats. The cylindrical kilns have brick cogging below their conical roofs and original timber cowls, with no windows present in the kilns at the time of the survey.

Inside, much of the original structural carpentry remains intact. The roofs are original, with the stowage roof designed with king post and strut construction, while the kiln roofs are single tier with very long rafters supported by steel ring bands.

The oasthouse is situated on a ridge that slopes down towards Paddock Wood to the north, making the kilns particularly prominent. It has group value with the adjacent converted barn and Wat Tyler's Cottage.
