Description

Hatchways is a house dating from around 1700, with later additions from the late 19th and 20th centuries at the rear. It features framed construction, with roughcast on the ground floor and tile-hanging on the first floor, topped by a peg-tile roof and brick stacks.

The house originally consisted of two cottages and is designed in an L-plan. The main block faces north, with the right (west) end roofed on an east-west axis and a crosswing at the left (east) end. Each room is heated by end stacks. At the rear, there is a second block, likely added later, also roofed on an east-west axis, and the crosswing has been extended to the rear in the 19th century.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front. The roof is half-hipped at both the left and right ends. There are large projecting end stacks with tile-hang batters. The windows are timber casements, likely from the 19th century, featuring one, two, three, and four lights with glazing bars. The entrance is located on the left return through a 20th-century conservatory.

Inside, there is exposed carpentry with runout stops on the main beams. The right-hand fireplace retains its original lintel, while the left-hand fireplace features a large square projecting bread oven. The wall-framing includes jowled wall posts.
