Description
This is a pair of headstones located approximately 3.5 meters east of the chancel of the Church of St Thomas A Becket. They date from the mid-18th century and commemorate members of the Hubble family. Each headstone is an upright slab of sandstone, standing about 1.1 to 1.3 meters high, with a shaped head that features a biblical scene carved in low relief. The inscriptions start in Gothic lettering but are mostly in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, including some italics. The left headstone depicts the Good Samaritan and records the death of Thomas Hubble, senior, in 1740. The right headstone illustrates a Judgement Day scene and commemorates the deaths of Thomas Hubble in 1764 and his son John in 1763.
