Description
This is a pair of adjacent headstones located approximately 9 meters south of the nave of the Church of St Thomas A Becket. Both headstones date from the late 18th century and commemorate members of the Mills family. The northern headstone is an upright slab of sandstone, standing about 1.25 meters high. Its shaped head features scrolls and is carved with a depiction of a child reading a book. The inscription starts in Gothic lettering but predominantly uses Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of William Mills in 1771. Next to it is a simpler stone with a shaped head, standing approximately 800 millimeters high. This stone is inscribed in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering and marks the death of 4-year-old William Mills in 1780.
