Description

Nos 9 and 10 Bampton Bank are a pair of cottages built around 1919 as a memorial for the First World War. They are constructed from red brick with stone ashlar dressings, featuring brick stacks and chimney shafts, and have a roof covered in diaper tiles.

The cottages are designed in a mirror-plan layout, facing southeast on a bank above the road. The overall structure forms a T-shape. Each cottage has two rooms on either side of a large central stack that serves back-to-back fireplaces, with projecting gable-end stacks at each end. In the center, each cottage has a one-room parlour that projects forward under parallel roofs.

The exterior is symmetrical, with a 1:2:1 window arrangement featuring timber casements that hold rectangular panes of leaded glass. The front parlour windows are taller and include mullions and transoms. The doorways are located at the back of the outer walls of the front parlour wings, both of which have replacement part-glazed doors and are sheltered by flat-roofed verandahs supported by brick piers. The main block has a gable-ended roof, while the front parlour wing features a double-gabled front with stone coping. A stone band at eaves level is inscribed in Roman serif capitals, reading "In memory of those who fell in the War, 1914-1918". Below the windows, there are three plaques inscribed with the names of the parish's fallen soldiers, framed by the dividing iron rainwater drainpipes.

The interior has not been inspected. These cottages serve as an attractive and meaningful war memorial.
