Description
The field chest tomb, located approximately 25 meters south of the chancel of the Church of St Martin, was erected in 1875 in memory of George and Susan Field. It is made of sandstone ashlar and has a rectangular shape. The tomb features Gothic-style panelled corner pilasters and concave corner panels on each side. The flat lid has moulded edges, and the tomb has a moulded base and a plain plinth. The lid is inscribed in plain capitals, noting the deaths of George Field in 1875 and his wife Sarah in 1869, while their children and other relatives are commemorated on the side panels. The chest tomb is enclosed by cast iron railings designed as simple Gothic arcades, which include large corner standards topped with crocketed finials.
