Description
The footbridge at Ashurst Station is a Grade II listed structure that spans the railway, linking the up- and down-line platforms. The station was opened in 1888. This cast iron footbridge features straight flights of steps with wooden treads leading up to a half landing, which is supported by four columns with moulded caps and bases. The columns are adorned with open spandrel-like braces that spring from small fluted brackets enriched with leaf designs. The stairs are equipped with octagonal newel posts that have moulded caps and bases, topped with a plain handrail over trelliswork. The main bridge rises with a few steps on each side to the walkway. Its curving girders create a flat-topped arch with rounded corners. The footway is reinforced by a series of L-profile iron strips, and the braces on either side of the parapet curve outward and then back in, resembling an onion shape.
