Description

This is an early 19th-century house, later extended in the 19th century, and refurbished and divided into flats around 1980. It is located on Ashurst Hill in Spelhurst, facing towards the Church of St Martin.

The house has a double-depth plan. The main block has a central entrance hall and staircase, with front and back rooms on each side, originally heated by projecting gable-end stacks (most of which are now disused). Extensions to the rear create services areas. A parallel block is linked to the rear of the main block by a short crosswing. The house has two storeys, with attic rooms in the roof space and basements below the rear extensions.

The symmetrical front facade features a three-window arrangement with 19th-century sash windows. These include 16-pane sashes in the outer bays and a 12-pane sash on the central first floor. The central front door is a four-panel design with an overlight, set behind a stucco Tuscan porch with a moulded entablature. Stucco quoins highlight the corners of the building, and a flat stucco band runs along the first-floor level. The eaves are plain, and the main roof has a gable end. The rear extensions have a variety of 19th and 20th-century windows. The gable-ended rear block includes several sash windows with margin panes. The interior was not inspected.
