Description

The building is a former coach house, now used as a garage, dating from the late 19th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond red brick with exposed timber framing above, while the back wall is made of coursed sandstone. The building features a stone stack with a brick chimney shaft and a peg-tile roof.

The former coach house faces east and backs onto Langton Road. The ground floor is occupied by a series of coach houses, while the first floor includes a fodder store on the left and a groom's room on the right, both under a cross roof with a rear stack. The structure is two storeys tall with a lean-to outshot on the left end, which is set back from the front.

The exterior includes a series of large double doors at the rear leading to the coach houses, most of which are original and hang on large iron hinges. The roof has a gable end on the left, with eaves that descend to first floor level. On the right, there is the front gable end of the cross roof, which jetties out on the ends of joists and features a window with diamond panes of leaded glass. A gabled dormer with wavy bargeboards is located on the right (north) side. The right end is also framed at first floor level and contains a loading hatch doorway, along with wavy bargeboards and a prominent pendant. Below this, on the ground floor, there is a two-light window with a lattice pattern of glazing bars, positioned to the right of the lean-to. The roof over this end has a louvred ventilator on the ridge. The rear stone wall is mostly blind, except for three cast iron breathers under the eaves of the fodder store, which are designed with ornamental patterns.

The interior has not been inspected. This coach house is part of a group of attractive buildings, most of which date from the 19th century, located on the approach to Speldhurst from the south.
