Description
The Lady Catherine Stewart Monument is a marble structure erected in 1812 to commemorate Lady Catherine Stewart, who was the sister of Lord Darnley and the wife of Brigadier-General Stewart, later Marquis of Londonderry. The monument features a diagonally-fluted cylindrical column with a turned base, which is mounted on a square plinth. A plain band encircles the middle of the column, displaying various carved rhymed inscriptions. At the top, the column is crowned with a flattish urn set on a square base. The monument is enclosed by a surround of heavy railings, with individual poles that are square in section and topped with forged arrow-head points, while the corner uprights are of a larger section. The surround includes a gate. For further details, see Colbran's 'Guide to Tunbridge Wells', published in 1840.
