Description

A row of four houses dating from the mid-19th century, situated on the south side of High Street, Pembury. The houses are constructed of plastered brick, with remnants of lightly incised ashlar detailing on the ground floor plaster. Brick stacks and chimneyshafts are visible, and the roofs are slate.

The houses are arranged with a contemporary plan, facing north, and numbered 15 to 21. Each is one room wide and two rooms deep, with a mirror-image layout. The end pairs each have an axial wall, creating back-to-back fireplaces. Both end houses appear to have been originally built as shops, evidenced by a second doorway in their end walls.

The building is three storeys high, with a symmetrical four-window façade featuring 16-pane sashes. The ground floor windows at each end are former shop windows, now canted bays with glazing bars. All four front doors, and those at the ends, retain their original three-panel design, along with overlights containing margin panes (although these are missing from number 19). Each door has a shallow hood supported by shaped brackets.

The interiors have not been inspected.

Small front gardens are enclosed from the road by original cast iron railings with spearheads, although these are missing from the front of number 21.
