Description
The row of six Woodhams headstones is located approximately 6 meters south of the nave of the Church of St Martin. These headstones date from the mid-18th century and commemorate members of the Woodhams family. They are upright sandstone slabs, standing between 450mm and 750mm high. Most of the headstones feature simple shaped heads carved with a winged cherub's head and inscriptions in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, sometimes including italics. The third headstone from the left, in memory of John Woodhams (date buried), is the simplest, lacking any carving and featuring only capital letters in its inscription. The most elaborate headstone is on the left end, commemorating Sarah Woodhams (died 1760), which includes a cherub's head surrounded by carved flowers and fruit, with the inscription beginning in Gothic lettering. The rightmost headstone, in memory of Ann Woodhams (died 1741), has a framed inscription.
