Description
There are three Wimshurst headstones and five bodystones located about 10 meters southeast of the porch of the Church of All Saints in Brenchley. These stones are made of freestone and date from the early 19th century. They form a family group in the northeast corner of the churchyard.
The two northern headstones are a matching pair with segmental tops and shouldered scrolled corners. Each features the eye of God carved at the top with rays descending from it, along with festoons carved in the corners. The inscriptions are depicted in an open book, carved in relief, with a swag of cloth below the inscription. The northernmost headstone commemorates Alexander Wimshurst, who died in 1805, while the next one honors Phoeby Wimshurst, who died in 1830. Each of these headstones has two associated bodystones.
The southern headstone is designed in the Gothick style, featuring three pointed arches at the top decorated with blind tracery. This headstone commemorates Hannah Wimshurst, who died in 1813, and has a bodystone to the east.
These stones create a cohesive group with two chest tombs located to the south, all set within an outstanding churchyard.
