Description
This is a house, originally dating from the early 17th century, that was converted in the mid-19th century and extended in the 20th century. It is part of the former Bedgebury Estate. The house is constructed of red brick in English bond with sandstone dressings, and has a tile roof. It is a good example of an estate cottage style.
The building is single storey with an attic, featuring a central gabled cross-wing with moulded pendant bargeboards to the gable ends. There are three gabled dormers and moulded stacks to the left, the central gabled cross-wing, the rear, and the right. A bay window is centrally positioned, with a wooden casement above, and two casements to the left and right, all with stone surrounds. Boarded doors are set within arched stone surrounds, the right-hand one with a gabled half porch. A late 20th-century extension is recessed at the left end, built to match the existing details with a dormer, bay window, and stone surrounds to the windows. The 19th-century details are similar to those of Tower Cottage nearby. The interior has not been inspected.
The listing recognizes the building's architectural interest and its group value, being situated opposite Tower Cottage, which is also listed at Grade II. Both buildings were originally part of the former Bedgebury Estate.
