Description
This is a group of three chest tombs located approximately 6 meters north of the vestry of the Church of St Mary the Virgin. They date from the late 18th century and are made of white marble. Each tomb is rectangular in shape and features flat lids with moulded edges and a moulded plinth.
The simplest tomb has inset corner pilasters with moulded caps and bases, along with fielded panels on each side. The inscription on its lid is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering but is very faint and difficult to read except in perfect lighting.
The second tomb has moulded baluster corners and fielded panels on each side. The south side panel is inscribed in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, with some italicized text, commemorating the death of Thomas Baker in 1767, along with other relatives noted on the remaining sides.
The third chest tomb features panels with concave corners. The lid has an inscription in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering that records the death of George Skinner in 1771, and it also includes a carved armorial bearing within a roundel.
