Description

The Pharmacy is a house with a chemist's shop, dating from around 1800, with the shop front rebuilt around 1970. It is constructed of Flemish bond red brick and features brick stacks with original chimney shafts, topped by a peg-tile roof.

The building has a double depth plan, facing north onto the Square. It is two rooms wide and two rooms deep, with heating provided by end stacks. The ground floor's internal partitions towards the front have been removed to create the shop space, although there was originally a central entrance hall. The stairs still rise at right angles to this entrance hall between the left rooms. The building has two storeys with attics in the roof space.

The exterior is symmetrical with a three-window front. The ground floor, rebuilt as a shop front around 1970, features a curving bow window with glazing bars on either side of a central front doorway that has double doors (part-glazed and panelled) and an overlight with a glazing bar pattern of circles. The first floor retains three original 12-pane sash windows with flat arches above, made of gauged rubbed brick. There is a stucco band at the eaves level and a plain parapet. The tall gable-ended roof includes two front flat-roofed dormer windows, each containing 9-pane sashes.

Inside, there is no exposed carpentry, but some original joinery remains, such as the stick baluster stair and panelled doors. The Pharmacy is part of an attractive and varied group of listed buildings in the centre of Hadlow.
