Description

Little Corneys is a small house, which once included a shop, dating from the 16th century with 19th and 20th century extensions. It has a timber-framed structure, with some brick underbuilding, and the front is plastered while the rear is hung with peg-tile. The roof is also covered with peg-tile, and there are brick stacks, although the chimney shafts are missing.

The house features a three-room plan, built end onto The Square and facing southwest. The front room, which is heated by a rear axial stack, has a 20th century staircase rising at the back of this stack. The kitchen, located behind the front room, has an end stack and is a 19th century extension. A third room, originally a single-storey outshot, was converted to domestic use around 1980. The front room with its stack is the original 16th century part of the house, which may have been part of a larger 16th century building, possibly on the site of the adjoining Corneys, although there is no evidence to confirm this.

The main house is two storeys tall, while the back room is single storey. The gabled front features a doorway to the right, a window to the left, and a single first-floor window. The panelled door and casements with glazing bars date from around 1980. The front is plastered, but original framing is visible towards the front of the right side wall, which is nogged with brick on the ground floor.

Inside, the front room has plain joists of large scantling and a relatively large plastered fireplace with an oak lintel that is cambered and chamfered, featuring a step stop to the right. It appears that the lintel has been cut off on the left, suggesting that the original fireplace was even larger. The roof above has a single bay with end tie-beam trusses, mostly plastered over, but queen struts are visible. The kitchen has plain carpentry details and its fireplace features a segmental brick arch.

Little Corneys is part of a varied group of listed buildings in the middle of Hadlow.
