Description

Mote Farm Cottages and Old Laundry Cottage is a row of cottages dating from the 16th century, with later 19th-century fronts on the right side. The buildings are arranged in an L-shape. Nos 1 and 2, located on the left, have a ground floor built of red and blue brick and first-floor close-studded timber-framing with plaster infill. They feature a plain tiled roof with a gabled semi-dormer on the left, two gabled dormers in the center, and a jettied gable. The central tower on the right has a second storey. There are two front off-ridge stacks, one at the left and one in the center. The cottages are two-storey with an attic and exhibit irregular fenestration, including two casements on the first floor and three on the ground floor. The entrance includes a boarded door at the extreme left, with glazed doors off-center to the left and at the extreme right. A tall door is located under the central tower, with a small door on the second floor.

Nos 3 and 4, on the right, feature a red and blue brick chequer pattern below and fish-scale and plain tile-hanging above. They have a plain tiled roof with a central shallow tile-hung return gable and two heavily moulded ridge stacks. These cottages are also two-storey and present an irregular four-window front with casements. The entrances consist of boarded doors with overlights, located at the extreme left and off-center to the right.

Old Laundry Cottage, which is the return wing at the rear of No 4, has a red brick ground floor and fish-scale and plain tile-hanging above. Its plain tiled roof has two pitches, with the right side slightly higher, matching the slight projection of the wall below. There is one bay of close-studded timber-framing with plaster infill on the right, and the left gable features moulded bargeboards. The central chimney-breast projects with a stack, and the cottage has an irregular two-window front with casements. The left-hand entrance has a half-glazed door. The rear of the entire range is timber-framed with plaster infilling, with the wing on the left being Old Laundry Cottage. The gabled three-storey center has a small cupola above, almost aligned with Ightham Mote to the west. This range may have once served as an outer court for Ightham Mote.
