Description
The Church of St Martin is a Grade II* listed building located on Church Road in Ryarsh. It dates from the 12th century and 15th century, featuring a tower, nave, south aisle, and chancel constructed from Kentish Ragstone. The church has a three-stage crenellated tower with diagonal buttresses and a prominent octagonal southeast stair turret that is taller than the tower itself, topped with a pyramidal tiled cap. The late 14th-century west windows are wide, with three lower lights and cusped lights above. The nave has two bays and a 14th-century south arcade supported by octagonal pillars with hollow chamfered arches. The aisle walls are from the 15th century, indicating that the aisle was likely widened during that period. The nave and chancel are from the 12th century, featuring small contemporary windows on the north side of both. There is a wide hollow-chamfered chancel arch. Inside, the chancel has a timber truss roof, and there is a 12th-century piscina with a scalloped bowl and moulded rim, along with later 19th-century fittings.
