Description
Tudor House is a house located on High Street in West Malling. The front range dates from the early 18th century, while the rear range is likely a timber-framed building from the 16th or 17th century that was refronted in the 18th century. The front is made of red brick in Flemish bond with grey headers, set on a plinth of stone rubble with stone galleting. It features a hipped tiled roof with a central brick chimneystack. The house has two storeys and attics, with four windows. The attic includes two flat-roofed dormers, each with old cames covering half of the window. A deep wooden modillion cornice adds detail to the eaves. The windows are early 19th-century sashes with 12 panes, surrounded by moulded architraves, a stringcourse, and rubbed brick arches. The doorcase features a late 18th or early 19th-century cornice with reeded brackets and drops similar to those at Arundal House, a reeded frieze, a rectangular fanlight, and a six-panelled door. There are attached spear railings to the forecourt on a stone base. The left side elevation has one 12-pane sash window with jalousies, one blocked window, and one cambered window on the ground floor. The rear wing is two storeys tall and has a lower elevation, with a tiled roof, a massive off-central brick chimneystack, and an end brick stack. It contains two casement windows and a 16-pane sash window on the right side. Inside, the main sitting room in the southeast corner is panelled in pine and painted to imitate hardwood with marquetry. There are three early grates and chimneypieces. The rear wing features exposed framing, a bread oven, and an oak six-panel door with 16th-century hinges and a latch.
