Description

The gatehouse and walls to the north and east of The Friars date from the 15th century, with some alterations made in the late 16th century. The structure is built from random rubble stone and features a parapet above a plain tiled roof. On the north side, there is a projecting breast that is off-centre to the left and corbelled out from the first floor. The gatehouse has two storeys, with an irregular arrangement of three windows on the first floor and one window on the ground floor. The windows are lattice casement types, with those on the first floor set in chamfered mullioned and transomed surrounds.

To the right, there is a tall, wide entrance arch featuring a moulded four-centred arch within a square surround, topped by a relieving arch. Cross-shaped loops are located to the right and left of the arch, and above it is a much weathered statue of the Virgin with Child. An octagonal stair-tower can be seen rising above the parapet to the left at the rear.

Flanking the entrance road are a pair of random stone walls that extend to the north, standing between 8 and 12 feet high and measuring approximately 110 yards long, with part of the wall being brick-coped on the right. To the east of the gatehouse, there is another random stone wall that is 70 yards long and 10 feet high, featuring a pair of brick piers towards the left end, which flank an entrance that is now partially blocked by a 20th-century insertion.
