Description

This is a late 18th or early 19th century building, originally designed as two shops with living accommodation above, situated on the High Street in West Malling. The front of the building is constructed of red brick, while the side elevation uses diaper brickwork. The roof is hidden behind a parapet, with a central chimneystack rendered in cement. The building is three storeys high and features two windows on the front elevation. The second floor has 12-pane sashes with rubbed brick voussoirs above them. The first floor incorporates two canted bays; the left one is original, the right one has been altered. The ground floor has two shopfronts dating to the early 19th century, each with deep fascias and pilasters. Doorcases flank the entrances, featuring round-headed arches with fanlights, impost blocks, and panelled doors. Inside No. 43, remnants of an open fireplace remain, along with a late 18th century marble fireplace with reeded architraves around the doors and windows.
