Description
Birling Ashes is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the 17th century with 19th and 20th century additions and alterations. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, while the first floor features mock half-timbering. The roof is plain tiled, half-hipped, with a central return gable, decorated barge boards, and a pendant. There are three off-ridge stacks located in the valley behind the ridge. The building has two storeys and attics, with an irregular arrangement of three windows on the first floor and four on the ground floor. The windows flanking the central door are carved and panelled, featuring linenfold decoration, and include diamond and polygonal lattice casements. The central boarded door is flanked by two carved wooden figures on brackets. The north front is flanked by two one-storey red brick outbuildings, which have been converted into living accommodation and both feature stone mullioned windows, with the right one serving as the hall. Inside, there is evidence of substantial 17th-century timber framing.
