Description
This is a terrace of four houses, built around 1838 as part of the final stages of James Townley’s redevelopment of the Napoleonic War barracks in Ramsgate. The buildings are constructed of stock brick, with some areas rendered, and have a slate roof. They are four storeys high, plus a basement, and feature a rusticated brick base, string courses marking each floor, and a parapet along the roofline, with chimneys arranged from left to right. Each house has two window bays, making a total of ten bays.
The windows on the second and third floors are mostly original sash windows with glazing bars, although No. 33 has replacement metal casements. All these windows have gauged heads. The first floor has margin light French windows, which are accompanied by tented verandahs, supported by cast iron valance, trellis piers, and simple iron railings. The ground floor incorporates bow windows, again with replacement metal casements on No. 33, and are accented by Ionic pilasters. The front doors, located to the right of the bow windows, are of four moulded and fluted panels, topped with semi-circular fanlights, set within projecting door surrounds and accessed by a flight of five steps. Basement windows have glazing bars with fleur-de-lys rails and acanthus-shaped heads. The terrace includes railed areas.
