Description

This is a terrace row dating to the 1780s, constructed of stock brick. It comprises three storeys and a basement, with a four-storey block in the centre-right. The buildings are arranged with parapets and stacks, extending left to right. Number 1 has four window bays, while the others have three (a total of 13 bays). All windows are glazing bar sashes; those on the first floor of number 4 are larger than elsewhere. The window heads are gauged, and the brickwork is red on number 5. Number 1 has four glazing bar sashes on the ground floor; otherwise, each house has two sashes, with six-panel doors to the left. A two-storey lean-to at the left end of number 1 features a sash window above the door. Numbers 1 and 2 share identical moulded doorcases, with panelled reveals, semi-circular fanlights, and a dentil cornice. Numbers 3 and 5 have similar doorcases, but without the dentil cornice; number 5 has a half-glazed door and a traceried fanlight. The doorcase to number 4 features attached Tuscan columns, a frieze, and a cornice, with an iron lamp bracket above. Flights of moulded steps lead to the entrances. Basement windows are glazing bar sashes. Spear-headed rails with a dograil are present at number 1, while spear-head rails are used elsewhere. Simple rails are fitted to the steps. The terrace was built by James Townley, the developer of late 18th century Ramsgate, who originally lived at number 1 before moving to Townley House in 1792. It was originally designed with a stable block that closed off the street as a cul-de-sac.
