Description
The Westgate-on-Sea War Memorial is situated in The Gardens, north of the junction of Sea Road and St Mildred’s Road. It features a large rough-hewn granite plinth topped with a plain Latin cross. The plinth rests on a low granite base, which is square in shape and surrounded by an iron railing supported by eight iron posts.
On the front face of the plinth, there are two plain panels. The upper panel displays the dedication "BRITISH LEGION/ 'LEST WE FORGET'/ 1914 – 1918." The lower panel lists the names of the fallen in alphabetical order across two columns.
In front of the plinth, a chamfered granite plaque affixed to the base commemorates those who lost their lives in the Second World War, stating: "IN MEMORY/ ALSO OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES DURING THE 1939 – 1945 WAR THIS TABLET WAS/ ERECTED BY THE MAYOR ALDERMAN AND BURGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF MARGATE/ A.D. 1951/ (NAMES)." To the right of the plinth, there is a similar granite plaque that reads "(NAME) 2003."
