Description

The Stable Block to the rear of Number 61 Waterside Hotel is a former stable and coach house with a hayloft and grooms' accommodation above. It was built around 1880 and designed by architects Ernest George and Peto in the Vernacular Revival style. The ground floor is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, while the first floor features alternating courses of plain and curved tiles, topped with a hipped roof that has a tall brick chimney stack. A distinctive feature is the central square, two-tier ornamental wooden dovecote, which has an ogee-headed lead cupola with a metal weathervane and a battered tiled base.

On the exterior, the principal elevation facing east includes a central gable with a tripartite wooden casement window and a hoist door to the first floor on the left. The ground floor has one original stable door, a door leading to the upper floor grooms' accommodation, and two original casement windows. The north side features a five-light casement window for the grooms' accommodation and double coach doors. The west elevation, which is visible from the hotel, has a triple dormer and a small first-floor window.

Inside, the stable block retains original boarded walls, cast iron and wooden stall partitions, a cast iron feeding trough, and brick flooring.

These stables were built for the adjoining Waterside Hotel, which was awarded the Home of the Year Award in 1882. The stable block remains unaltered and showcases the Vernacular Revival style by Ernest George and Peto.
