Description

The lighthouse on the West Pier in Ramsgate was built in 1842 by John Shaw. It is constructed from Cornish granite, glass, and iron. The lighthouse features a cylindrical granite column with a moulded base and entablature, and the frieze is inscribed three times with the words "Perfugium Miseris." There is a south western doorway that has a three-panel iron door, with a date stone above it reading "AD MD CCCXCII." At the top, there is an octagonal glass lantern with an iron cornice decorated with shells, along with a ball finial and a weather vane. The lighthouse contains a 150-watt lamp with a stepped lens, providing a light range of 7 miles. This structure replaced an earlier lighthouse designed by Benjamin Wyatt, which was too close to the pier head and had been damaged by the masts of overhanging ships.
