Description
The Harbour and Lighthouse at Port Logan, built in 1818, features a stone pier with a circular lighthouse tower.
The pier is constructed from large blocks of coursed rubble masonry, with the pier-head facing north and east, and a rounded angle to the northeast. There is a staircase leading to the water level on the east side. The pier has projecting granite socket stones—three on the north and four on the east—that were formerly used to secure upright wooden fenders. The outer wall to the west is pitched and rises to form a parapet that leads to a stepped wall-walk. The parapet ends in granite masonry at the rounded northwest angle, which is adjacent to the lighthouse tower. There are two granite bollards, and the quay is paved with cobbles while the wall-walk is slab-paved.
The lighthouse tower is a three-stage circular structure that includes an open light chamber at the third stage. It is located to the northwest of the pier and incorporates the parapet. The tower is made of granite and sandstone ashlar, featuring a band course between the first and second stages. There is a doorway on the southeast side that leads to the ground floor chamber, which contains a small fireplace and a shelved recess. A forestair leads to the doorway on the south side, providing access to the first floor chamber, which has a window to the southwest and an open hatch leading to the light chamber above, previously accessed by a ladder. The open light chamber is supported by four rebated square pillars and features a stone conical roof with a concave profile. Additionally, there is a latrine annexe located under the forestair, which has a doorway to the east and includes a stone trough and mural chute.
