Description
Saint Augustine's Cross is a commemorative cross erected in 1884, carved by J Roddis of Birmingham. It was commissioned by Granville George Leveson-Gower, the second Earl of Granville and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, to mark the landing of St Augustine in 597 AD at Ebbsfleet. The cross stands about 7 metres high and is made of stone in a Celtic style, set on a stepped base. The tapering shaft features a diaper pattern and includes carvings of Archbishops, angels, and beasts. At the top, it has a circular design with Celtic motifs. The tapering plinth bears a Latin inscription that notes St Augustine's first sermon on English soil was preached to King Ethelbert of Kent near this location.
