Description
St Stephen's College is a school, originally a house, dating from around 1830. The building is stuccoed with a slate roof and stuccoed end stacks. It is three storeys high and has five windows on the front elevation. Features include a parapet with coping, a moulded eaves cornice, and a band between the ground and first floors, along with a plinth. The second floor has six-pane sash windows with horns, while the first floor has twelve-pane sash windows with horns, and the ground floor has eight-pane sash windows with horns. A central portico features two-thirds fluted and one-third plain Tuscan columns, supporting a round-headed doorcase with an original half-glazed door and an incised panel at the base. To the right is a contemporary two-storey wing, featuring balustrading with panels decorated with an incised Greek Key design. This wing has a twelve-pane sash window to the first floor and a sash window without glazing bars to the ground floor, flanked by blank panels. The left side elevation has five windows as well as flat-roofed dormers. Attached to the left is a one-storey addition from the 19th century, also with balustrading and a panel of Greek Key design. The front of this addition has a large window without glazing bars, flanked by blank panels, while the side features a colonnade of four Tuscan columns and two piers. Large 20th-century extensions have been added in brick and tile hanging.
