Description

Lynsted Court is a hall house, originally dating back to the 15th century, with significant additions around 1600. It is constructed with a timber frame and close-studded panels, filled with plaster and painted brick, and has a plain tiled roof. The house originally comprised a two-bay hall with internal screens, a passage, and projecting porch, with two further projecting wings added in the early 17th century. The ground floor sits upon a flint and brick plinth.

The wings on the left and right are jettied with moulded bresumers (the supporting frames for the overhanging upper floors) and carved and moulded bargeboards. There is ornamental bracing in the right-hand gable. The main roof is hipped at the right end. The windows are arranged irregularly, featuring an oriel window in the left gable and a four-light bay window on the ground floor. A three-light oriel window sits centrally, with one wooden casement window and three further wood casement windows on the ground floor, and another oriel window also on the ground floor. A boarded door is situated within a two-storey gabled projecting porch, also jettied at the first floor level. A further one-storey brick extension contains a door with six raised and fielded panels, at the left end.

Inside, the hall has been ceiled over, reflecting the house’s former use as three cottages, but two arched doorways in the screens that divide the passage from the service wing (at the right end) remain visible. The plaster ceiling features octagonal and rectangular panels. The building was formerly known as Seward’s.
